The original destination was Italy, but fortunately Debbie Hawkes managed to arrange a relocation to Andorra, when it looked like the trip would have to be cancelled due to complicated covid regulations.
Debbie Hawkes, Teacher at the Prep School, tell us more about the experience:
“We had fantastic conditions, as it was snowing when we arrived and then continued overnight, resulting in 50cm of fresh snow, which lasted while we were there. We skied most days under glorious sunny skies. We had a range of abilities from complete beginners to very competent skiers. All children participated in ski school and the progress made was amazing, particularly those for whom it was their first experience on skis.”
Après ski highlights included shopping in Andorra le Vella and a final night Karaoke/bowling evening. In addition, there was swimming, a quiz night and a movie night.
Debbie highlights that for many children it was their first trip away from home, “this contributed to some worries beforehand, particularly as it was overseas. It was lovely to see the children support each other, if their friends were a little homesick or worried. Skiing didn’t come easy to all, so both determination and perseverance were seen in many cases.”
“There were nightly inspections to ensure that rooms were kept tidy and the challenge of doing so brought out the best in our students. All the children coped really well and the experience has no doubt increased their self-confidence. Because of that they will be considerably better equipped for future trips, that will occur later on in their school journey.”
Jemma Bryan, Head of P.E, was a representative from Heatherton and saw it as a fantastic opportunity for nine Year 6 girls, the most from Heatherton ever on this trip, to mix with the Prep and make new friends ahead of going to Berkhamsted Senior School.
“There are some very good skiers and the girls loved being spilt into various groups and taking on the slopes of Andorra. Within their groups, they encouraged and supported each other, as well as having a lot of fun. The evening activities were great and gave all the children on the trip the opportunity to mix and socialise in a relaxed environment.”
