Drama, music and dance scholars at Westholme School will be showcasing their favourite things as they present a much-loved musical to demonstrate their talents.
Audiences at the school’s professional theatre in Blackburn will be transported to wartime Austria as senior pupils perform musical classic The Sound of Music.
The show, on 29-30 June and 1-2 July, will showcase many of the music, dance and drama scholars, as well as many other students who attend the top independent school in Lancashire.
Music, dance and drama scholarships are available for award on entry into Year 7 following an audition. The fee remission ranges from 10% to a maximum award of 50% for exceptional talent. The next scholarship assessment days will be held in February 2023.
Music scholarship candidates are also available for young people who demonstrate talent on an instrument, including the voice. Candidates are normally expected to be working towards Grade 1 equivalent, and to have been learning their instrument for a minimum of 12 months.
Dr Richard Robson, Principal, said: “The Westholme Scholarship Programme is open to all students with flair and talent in the performing arts. Our professionally trained staff provide exceptional coaching and opportunities for students to excel in dance, drama and music.
“When you walk into our breath-taking professional theatre for the very first time, everyone says they can’t believe how lucky our students are to have use of such a magnificent facility on a daily basis.
“Our scholars are provided with a bespoke programme to enable every student the opportunity to develop their skills, perform in a variety of productions and performances within the school and inculcate their leadership skills by mentoring other students as they progress.”
Mrs Holland, the School's newly appointed Director of Performing Arts, herself a graduate of Manchester’s esteemed Royal Northern College of Music, said: “The scholarships allow local, talented and gifted young people to achieve beyond their potential in the performing arts and also benefit from the unrivalled holistic excellence unique to Westholme.”
Miss Roberts, Head of Drama, said: “The Sound of Music will enable us to demonstrate the breadth of talent we have at Westholme, with many of our drama, dance and music scholars being showcased, alongside students performing on stage for the first time since the pandemic.
“We can’t wait to see them take to the stage; the Ribble Valley hills will truly be alive with The Sound of Music.”
