Leweston School believe that children and young people should have a say in decisions that affect their lives. A School Council can provide a meaningful way in which pupils can voice their opinions and have their views taken in to account.
As part of their PSHE provision, the pupils learn about the Fundamental British Values which include; democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. Leweston’s Prep School Council have been democratically elected by their peers and meet regularly to discuss issues relating to their educational and personal development. They represent their peers during the meetings and then disseminate the information once back in the classroom.
The Prep School asked the local MP Chris Loder, to visit the newly elected council so that they could understand more about democracy and the political system. Council members canvassed their peers for questions to ask Mr Loder and will then feed this information back to their classes.
