WETHERBY SENIOR PRESS RELEASE: UNIVERSITY DESTINATIONS 2023
Wetherby Senior’s Class of 23 are set to join top universities across the UK, continental Europe and North America this autumn.
Following success in their A Levels, the destinations list for Wetherby Senior’s outgoing Year 13 and 2022 gap year students means:
• around 60% will join Russell Group universities, the UK-based group of world-leading research institutions, including UCL (four alumni), King’s College London (four alumni), LSE, Exeter (four alumni) and Southampton (three alumni)
• almost 20% will be studying outside the UK at top universities in North America or across continental Europe
Wetherby Senior’s newest alumni are set to read a variety of challenging and interesting degree programmes. Of those remaining in the UK, around 40% will be studying a STEM subject, with courses ranging from aeronautical engineering at Glasgow to zoology at Bristol.
Of the four Wetherby Senior alumni now joining Russell Group institution UCL is Guillaume, who achieved A*A*A in his A Levels and will read pharmacy. He said: “I’m so happy with my grades and so excited about studying at UCL. Of course I am also a little sad to be leaving Wetherby Senior, as I have been very happy in Marylebone and have found Wetherby Senior to be a great community.”
Another 40% of this outgoing cohort will now study a social science course - including economics, politics, and international relations - while boys taking humanities options include filmmaking at the London Film Academy, film studies at UCL, and two boys set to read classics at Exeter.
Wetherby Senior encourages university ambition and offers bespoke support at a much earlier age than most other schools, with each boy assigned their own university advisor from Year 11 onwards. Applying to study abroad is a specialism of our School and, in line with previous years, around 20% of our Class of 23 will now study outside the UK. This includes seven boys joining world-class universities across the USA like New York University, University of Southern California and Notre Dame University.
Matteo achieved A*A*A*A in his A Levels and will now study at the University of Pennsylvania, a top Ivy League institution in the United States. He said: “The US admissions system is so different to the UK, and I feel very lucky to have had Wetherby Senior staff to guide me. During Year 12, our US Advisor offered great advice on different universities, plus an invaluable insight into what colleges were looking for in application essays.”
Joe Silvester, Headmaster, added: “All at Wetherby Senior are very proud of our Class of 23 and we wish all our leavers every success in their future studies, whether they are in the UK, continental Europe or North America.
“We look forward to welcoming our alumni back to Marylebone in the years to come, so they can recount their experiences and further inspire current Wetherby Senior pupils.”
