The Royal School is delighted that, following the Independent Schools Inspectorate’s (ISI) Focused Compliance and Educational Quality Inspection carried out in April 2023, The School has achieved the highest possible rating of ‘excellent’ in all areas.
The inspection reports on the quality of the school’s work, focusing on two key outcomes:
· The achievement of the pupils, including their academic development, and
· The personal development of the pupils.
A school can achieve a rating of ‘excellent’, ‘good’, ‘sound’, or ‘unsatisfactory’.
The ISI found that in both key outcomes The Royal School should be rated ‘excellent’ with a rating of ‘excellent’ in every category, without exception, across all areas of provision.
The report stated, “Across the school and in a range of subjects, pupils of all ages and abilities make rapid progress and achieve high standards in relation to their individual starting points.
“Pupils’ self-confidence, self-discipline, self-esteem, self-knowledge and resilience are excellent. This results from the many opportunities afforded to them to develop their own initiative and autonomy.” The Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) is the body approved by the Department for Education for the purpose of inspecting schools belonging to Independent Schools Council (ISC) and reporting on compliance with independent school regulations. ISI inspections involve inspectors observing lessons, conducting formal interviews with pupils and examining pupils’ work. Inspectors hold discussions with senior members of staff, observe extra-curricular activities and attend registration sessions and assemblies. Parents and pupils receive pre-inspection questionnaires, the results of which are analysed by inspectors, and inspectors examine regulatory documentation.
Head teacher, Pippa Smithson, said, “We are thrilled that our school has been recognised as overwhelmingly excellent. We have long been known as a nurturing school but we are delighted to be recognised as excellent in the academic sphere.”
Mrs Angela Kennedy, whose son Hugo was appointed head boy in the summer term, commented, “The Royal School’s staff are an exceptional team of teachers who genuinely care for each individual young person, and their progress and happiness. Since joining the school in Year 8, our son has thrived at The Royal Senior School. As parents, it has been a tremendous joy for us to watch him flourish, gain confidence, and succeed in such a happy, nurturing environment.” The full ISI report is available to be read here.
